Toronto Star: Metrolinx in court over Eglinton Crosstown LRT injunction for ‘environmental racism’

On Oct. 8, 20204, Toronto Star reporter, Ben Cohen, reported on the Save Eglinton Flats Coalitions injuction hearing:

A community group is taking Metrolinx to court Tuesday to halt Eglinton LRT construction on the grounds that it is discriminatory.

The Save Eglinton Flats Coalition argues Metrolinx engaged in “environmental racism” by planning to clear 1,200 trees in Mount Dennis, a “lower socio-economic and culturally diverse” area.

Whereas LRT construction will tiptoe around more affluent neighbourhoods to the northwest, Mount Dennis, located around Jane Street and Eglinton Avenue West, will have its parkland ripped apart, said the coalition’s spokesperson Neiland Brissenden.

“It was communicated as a done deal, not as a partnership with the community,” he said. “Nobody in the community is against the government or the LRT. We understand how important it is for our community. We’re against our parks being wiped out.”
